Legislative files, 1827-1828.

The Joint Standing Committee on Roads and Canals considered proposed legislation for extending and improving a canal from Northampton to Northfield and for generally improving navigability in the Connecticut River Valley. Consideration of these bills culminated, following committee report 1827 H 45, in the passage of St 1827, c 128 (1828), which authorized the Hampshire and Hampden Canal Company to construct and maintain a canal from Northampton to the northern border of the Commonwealth. Legislative files are documents referred to or created by the committee during these considerations.
